Claus came from a high kill shelter in Ohio that was overrun with Hounds. Claus has the markings of a Red Tick Coon Hound but his build is something more like a Boxer. He has been with us awhile because he has had to compete with some of the more popular breeds and some very cute pups.

He lives with me, my husband, teenage boys, 3 other dogs and 2 cats. He is an easy dog to have in our home. He does well with all the animals and people. With a gentle lead, or other collars that encourage a dog to stay focused on the owner, he does well on his walks.

Claus spends his days playing with his foster friends and napping. He will go for a walk and enjoys it but he is not high energy. He is not a big barker, nor does he chew anything he shouldn't. He rides well in the car. He is not a long distance runner but he is strong- we tell him he has the "Lazy Hound Syndrome" :)

He doesn't know his own strength and because of this (although he loves children) I see him as a better match in a home with older children. He is motivated by food and affection. I am working on some basic training. He can sit, comes when called and I think with a little work he could have a reliable recall off leash. This is motivated by him wanting to be with his people as much as anything. He has gotten loose a couple of times, but once he sees you he comes right back.

He can sit and wait for his food. He is house broken but hates the rain and has to be strongly encouraged to go out when the weather is not to his liking. He is not crated at my home. During the day he is in the kitchen and has access to a dog door and a play yard. He sleeps on his blanket at night in the kitchen. He gets along with my 3 dogs but he would do well as an only dog also.

Claus is a loyal and loving dog. He would be a great companion for a family or person who was comfortable providing structure, and yes love. He will respond to anyone who establishes themselves as the leader. In return you would truly get a best friend. He has a great mix. He has the sweet lazy side of the Hound mixed with the strong smart Boxer breed. If you meet the criteria Claus is looking for you would be rewarded with a friend for life.
