Maggie Josephine Smith

Meet Maggie:

Maggie and her family are Katrina victims. Maggie's mom, a black Lab, was left homeless with a litter of newborn pups. She and her family were taken to a temporary shelter , in hopes of finding their family. No family came..... and Maggie's family waited 4 months before they were released for adoption. Maggie's mom and littermates have all now been adopted .......but Maggie still needs a home by March 15th! That is the date that the temporary shelter closes and remaining dogs will be destroyed.

Maggie is a delightful Lab mix. We know mom was a black Lab, dad was a smaller breed ; for Maggie is small (around 30-35 lbs). She is just 8 months old and has grown up in this temporary shelter. She has been provided basic health care, food and what love the volunteers had time to give. Even without a family of her own, she has developed into a wonderful young lady and loves everyone!

3-16-06 Update;

Maggie will be arriving to NY on March 18th. Look for some new pictures soon!

3-24-06 Update:

Maggie just arrived safely into her foster home..........she as sweet as can be!

3-25-06 Update:

Maggie FINALLY arrived safely on Sat afternoon 3/25. I can tell you that this little pup has really been through  a lot in her very young life. She was first picked up after surviving hurricane Katrina with her Mom and siblings. Maggie had to be about 8 weeks old at the time, imagine the horror of surviving such a major storm like that at her young age !!! Maggie's mom must have been a devoted mommie to save all her babies.

Even though the shelter helpers were devoted to all of the Katrina pets, their time was still limited. Maggie vied for attention from the staff, even though they did their best, Maggie wanted and needed more. She learned that if she jumped up on people she was likely to get a quick pat from the workers, so this strategy seemed to be rewarded and so she continues it. Maggie will need to learn some manners, so she will be adopted with the agreement thet she will be entered in an obedience school, not only to teach her some manners, but also to help socialize her.

Not only did she survive a horrible disaster, but she watched her Mom and all her siblings, except one, go on to their forever homes one by one, while she and her sister still remained behind. Fema was cutting off funding and the shelter was scheduled to close, and poor Maggie and her sister Molly were no closer to a home of their own. Maggie and Molly were only a few days away from being euthanized when Blue Moon stepped in.

WE connected with a great group headed by Sharon Gardner who literally drove all the way from NY to LA and picked up ALL the remaining dogs to bring them to safety. Maggie's sister Molly was HW positive , so she will be treated by Sharon's group, and then she will be joining Blue Moon soon.

Even after everything Maggie has been through she remains a typical loving pup, she is 9 months old, she is small, she weighs 25 lbs, and will not get much bigger. She is fully vetted, spayed, utd, parasite free,, and HW  neg. Maggie walks fairly good on a leash, she is almost housetrained, and LOVES people and attention. She loves to snuggle up, she really is submissive with other dogs at this point. but in the shelter she loved to play with the other dogs she knew. She rides well in a vehicle, and is crate trained already. She is getting to feel her way around my house, she is ok with the noise of the TV, but she hesitates coming through doorways.

Maggie will need to gain confidence out in the big world, but she has the will and the curiosity to get it done and prosper. She has won my heart already, she is a survivor and the sweetest pup, who could resist !!!!

 SOON!

3-31-06 Update

Maggie went to her new home today, it was love at first sight. Maggie will have a little girl of her own to play with and a very devoted new Mom and Dad. She will go for long walks everyday, and be going to a puppy socialization course soon. She will also have her own resident Kitty who she is very curious about, and really wants to play with , but kitty is beiing a little cautious right now, but is curious about Maggie also, so they will be good friends in time. Maggie will blossom in this home and is a very happy pup.

A special thanks to Josephine Smith for being Maggie's Orphan Angel and the Beth, Maggie foster mom.

4-15-06 Update

We want to thank everyone for the joy they have brought our family.  Maggie joined our family April 1, 2006.  She is such a wonderful, loving, fun, and 'very' well-behaved, considering she is only 9 months old.  She still is going to obedience classes, but she really is listening good.

It has been over a year that a dog has not been in our family, and it is such a joy to have Maggie here.  We just love her SO much!  She is keeping us busy, and I am glad to have taken all the 'steps' with Blue Moon and to have her in our lives.  Thank you Bev and Dee, and those I did not get to meet!  You are all blessed.-Rhoda
