Max is a delightful 5 year male yellow lab. In addition to the problems of being lost in the hurricane, Max was rescued by the emergency Shelter after being bitten by a snake on his neck. Most of the Katrina emergency shelters had to close in March 2006. The kind volunteers worked very hard on giving some of the pets a second chance in life. Max's sweet personally, the shelter volunteers and our Friends at Furry Friends saved his life.
You would never recognize him now from then. For some time his poor neck was swollen and he had to endure all kinds of treatments, but he is healed and almost ready for a new home. He also had to endure 4 wks of Heartworm treatment.
3-26-06 Update
Here is Amy's first impressions of Max. "He is definitely a sweet dog. I am calling him Maximilian or Maxi-mus as Max is just not enough for such a sweet gentle boy. Max could definitely use some weight. I would say he is about 10 lbs underweight. You can see his ribs and back bond without much effort. He is a small boy, American lab, not English. Great petite boy".

4-6-06 Update
Hello my name is Max, my foster Mom calls me Maxi mus or Maximilian! She says she does this because Max is just not enough for such a special boy like me. I know sit, down, no, off, in your cage, on your bed and give me your paw.
I have been on several road trips in my short time with my Mom. I love to ride in the car. I am content to sit in the seat looking out the window. When she leaves me, I just lay down and rest until her return. I have also been crated when I ride but I prefer to be able to see.
Walks? Did you say walks?? I LOVE WALKS! Can we go again??? And again??
I am learning to walk nice on a leash. In my past life I really never had to worry about a leash. I just went anywhere when I wanted. Begging for food and counter surfing? Yes, I do both but my Mom says this is not allowed here. We are working on this.
Children, cats, birds or other dogs?
Kids are fine with me I can take them or leave them. Any person is really a friend to me as long as you are willing to take a nap with me on the floor (did I mention I love to sleep)?
Cats and Birds - My foster Mom has a parrot and really, I am afraid of him. I don't understand how such a small green thing can make so much noise or yell at me! Cats- take 'em or leave 'em. I don't currently have the energy to chase them.
Other dogs? I saw a golden at the vet the other day and thought I had found my true love! Boy, she was pretty. I currently, live with a German shepherd who allows me to live in her house but won't be my
friend.
The best home for me would be where I can have free run of the house as I am a good boy and house trained, and do not crew on items in the house except an occasional bone. I would love to have someone to walk with me at least once per day. I prefer a fenced yard so I can play out
of harms way.
Additionally, my new family must understand that my next few weeks must be spent as if I was at a spa relaxing. Do to the treatment I have had been having, I will need to see the vet for a follow up on the 22nd. If I am placed in a home before then, my new family must be committed to following up. This in turn will provide me with a much happier life.
Skinny? Do you say skinny? Yes, I can use a few pounds. My Mom is working on adding them slowly. We didn't have much in the dog food department down south.
4-22-06 Update
Max has just returned from the vet and has a clean bill of health. He is running in the yard and playing with my German Shepherd as we speak. Max will need to be kept on a heartworm preventative for the rest of his life. This will keep him healthy. Max would enjoy a home where he is the only dog. However, he would be just fine in a home where the other dog respects Max when he has had enough play time. Sometimes his legs get tired. Max would love nothing more that a nice couple or single person to take him for a walk once or twice a day. Other than that he is happy to lay by your side, never asking to be up on the furniture. What a great boy Max is!
